Healthy Gum Tips From a Periodontist

When it comes to keeping your gums healthy, a periodontist can help you. There are several ways you can keep your gums healthy. This ranges from regular brushing to avoiding smoking. Read on to learn more tips for healthy gums.

Cleaning out the mouth

It should come as no surprise that brushing and flossing are number one on the list of healthy gum tips. Patients should brush the teeth at least twice a day, or after every meal if possible. It is important to use a toothbrush that has soft bristles. If the bristles begin to fray, the toothbrush needs to be replaced to avoid gum damage.

While brushing, patients should hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. This will allow the toothbrush to remove all of the plaque or food particles. Moving the toothbrush in small strokes will be more effective than long strokes. However, patients should not press down too hard, as this can cause gum erosion and removal of enamel.

The right toothpaste is also important. Toothpaste should contain fluoride. This will help strengthen the teeth. Having the American Dental Association’s seal of approval on the package is also important.

Some people may not know that foods can also clean out the mouth. For example, vegetables that are high in fiber can be helpful. Green tea can kill bacteria in the mouth. And dairy products increase the production of saliva.

Many people underestimate how important daily flossing is for gum health. This can remove plaque and food from between the gums and teeth. These are places that a toothbrush cannot reach. When the food remains here, it can cause tartar. This happens when bacteria build up and form a sticky substance.

Using a mouthwash

There are two types of mouthwashes, according to the ADA. These are cosmetic and therapeutic. A therapeutic mouthwash can offer more benefits to patients than a cosmetic one can. Children under the age of six should not use mouthwash. It is also not a replacement for flossing or brushing every day. However, it offers many benefits to adults, including:

  • Preventing gum disease
  • Slowing down tartar buildup
  • Reducing plaque on the teeth
  • Removing food from the mouth

Regular dental exams

Even with the right oral hygiene, individuals can still have plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth. The good news is that a periodontist can easily remove this. If a patient is experiencing early signs of gum disease, a periodontist can treat this. Early intervention is key when it comes to gum disease and can prevent damage to the tissues in the mouth.

Visit a periodontist today

Following the tips above can help you keep your gums healthy. Eating a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables can also help keep your teeth healthy. However, if you think you are experiencing any signs of gum disease, it is vital to visit a periodontist. This type of dentist can evaluate your gums to look for signs of infection.
